Hai câu thơ tuyệt vời của cụ Tố Như—
dịch sang tiếng Anh
(Two wonderful verses of the Poet Nguyễn Du (1766-1820) in English translation)
"Lặng nghe lời nói như ru
Chiều xuân dễ khiến nét thu ngại ngùng"
All silent, she listened to his lullaby words
Spring drifted by, kindling
her beautiful autumn(like) face in shyness (*)
(CH)
Cố g/sư Huỳnh Sanh Thông ở đ/học Yale dịch trong “The Tale of Kieu” là :
All hushed, she drank in the words whose music lulled—
Love stirred the autumn calm of her fair eyes

Notes :
* “shyness” here can only "gauge" and interpret “ngại ngùng” partially. Because of the complex, interweaving and somewhat-open-to-discussion meaning of the word . At the same time translation/transliteration brevity/balance which has “issues” related to syllable, meter matters does not welcome, or ”permit” lengthy translation, where clarification and explanation should be left in notes. The idea behind “ngại ngùng” can be explained as “ becoming gradually more shy, at the same time this “shyness” augments the attractiveness of Thúy Kiều”, the main character in The Tale of Kiều ( Truyện Kiều ).
Another issue open to discussion is : where can this “ngại ngùng” be observed ? The late Yale Prof. Huỳnh Sanh Thông sees it as the “shyness &...” in her eyes. I understand it as the “ shyness & ...” of her whole face. The beauty of autumnal season(s) is compared figuratively and “stirringly/delicately” to the beauty of her face, not just the eyes.
