Scarborough Fair

Tuyệt

Một phiên bản nguyên tác dân ca Ăng lê. Song ca nam nữ

Male part-
Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme;
Remember me to the one who lives there,
For once she was a true love of mine.
Tell her to make me a cambric shirt,
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme;
Without any seam or needlework,
Then she shall be a true love of mine.
Tell her to wash it in yonder well,
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme;
Where never sprung water or rain ever fell,
And she shall be a true lover of mine.
Tell her to dry it on yonder thorn,
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme;
Which never bore blossom since Adam was born,
Then she shall be a true lover of mine.
Female part-
Now he has asked me questions three,
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme;
I hope he'll answer as many for me,
Before he shall be a true lover of mine.
Tell him to buy me an acre of land,
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme;
Between the salt water and the sea sand,
Then he shall be a true lover of mine.
Tell him to plough it with a ram's horn,
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme;
And sow it all over with one pepper corn,
And he shall be a true lover of mine.
Tell him to sheer't with a sickle of leather,
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme;
And bind it up with a peacock's feather,
And he shall be a true lover of mine.
Tell him to thrash it on yonder wall,
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme,
And never let one corn of it fall,
Then he shall be a true lover of mine.
When he has done and finished his work.
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme:
Oh, tell him to come and he'll have his shirt,
And he shall be a true lover of mine.

(Simon & Garfunkel)
Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel - 1968
Nana Mouskouri

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine
Tell her to make me a cambric shirt
(On the side of a hill in the deep forest green)
Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme
(Tracing a sparrow on snow-crested ground)
Without no seams nor needlework
(Blankets and bedclothes a child of the mountains)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
(Sleeps unaware of the clarion call)
Tell her to find me an acre of land
(On the side of a hill, a sprinkling of leaves)
Parsley, sage, rosemary, & thyme
(Washed is the ground with so many tears)
Between the salt water and the sea strand
(A soldier cleans and polishes a gun)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
Tell her to reap it in a sickle of leather
(War bellows, blazing in scarlet battalions)
Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme
(Generals order their soldiers to kill)
And to gather it all in a bunch of heather
(And to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine.

(Trad. - Arrgt P. Simon, A. Garfunkel / P. Delanoë)
Nana Mouskouri

Loving Socrates—

                                                             * *

In the last year of high school, I “met” Socrates, and loved the way he used the midwife term to describe his method of guiding Athens’ youth to clarify the problem of meaning, of definition, of “first lessons” to “the exact”, to “logical investigations”. Years and years later, I still "love" him for saying this:

“My art of midwifery is in general like theirs [real midwives]; the only difference is that my patients are men, not women, and my concern is not with the body but with the soul that is in travail of birth. And the highest point of my art is the power to prove by every test whether the offspring of a young man's thought is a false phantom or instinct with life and truth. I am so far like the midwife that I cannot myself give birth to wisdom, and the common reproach is true, that, though I question others, I can myself bring nothing to light because there is no wisdom in me. The reason is this. Heaven (Jowett: "the god") constrains me to serve as a midwife, but has debarred me from giving birth. So of myself I have no sort of wisdom, nor has any discovery ever been born to me as the child of my soul. Those who frequent my company at first appear, some of them, quite unintelligent, but, as we go further with our discussions, all who are favored by heaven make progress at a rate that seems surprising to others as well as to themselves, although it is clear that they have never learned anything from me. The many admirable truths they bring to birth have been discovered by themselves from within. But the delivery is heaven's work and mine.”
One great soul, one “giant” of a man, and we may lift our hats and whisper to ourselves, “ the conscience and integrity of Athens", when learning of how he refused to escape death and took the hemlock. Philosophy had engaged with life, and become life there. Not only to realize truths.

Now, reading again the below quote from him, as very much close to what Plato said in Apology :
" I know that I know nothing (absolutely/with “extreme” certainty/correctness- CH added words in parentheses) "
It appears convincingly to me that with the problems he thought about, there were things to him, at least, (very ) hard to comprehend/understand thoroughly, completely, or things which “proved” that approaches to their solutions did not work well, or simply : could not be known. I believe, precisely for that reason that he uttered that famous statement.

What a ”soul”, a genuine, phenomenal truth seeker !
----
Socrates regularly used two metaphors to describe what he considered his life-work to be. One metaphor was that of the gadfly, the horsefly that stings the intellectually and morally sluggish citizens of Athens with his questioning. "For Athens is a great and noble steed that is tardy in its motions…

Bài Ca Gởi Gió Tây- Percy B. Shelley

Dịch  tặng Gió Lớn, Cuồng  phong, những ngọn gió gây bão ngày mai

* *

IV
Nếu tôi, lá chết, vương bên Thần Gió
Nếu tôi mây hoang, bay lướt cùng Người
Hoặc sóng thở gấp kề cận quyền năng, chia

Nhịp tim bỏng rẫy, yếu kém tự do

Tro bụi, than lửa.

Ode to the West Wind

Percy Bysshe Shelley

I
O wild West Wind, thou breath of Autumn’s being,
Thou, from whose unseen presence the leaves dead
Are driven, like ghosts from an enchanter fleeing,

Yellow, and black, and pale, and hectic red,
Pestilence-stricken multitudes: O thou,
Who chariotest to their dark wintry bed

Vàng, đen, sầu úa, đỏ thẫm cuống cuồng
Hỗn độn héo, bệnh : Ôi Tây phong,
Vững cương mau, đưa chúng về đêm đông đen tối
The wingèd seeds, where they lie cold and low,

Each like a corpse within its grave, until
Thine azure sister of the Spring shall blow.
Kìa hạt mầm tung gió, nằm trong giá lạnh
Như xác huyệt mộ thảm sầu, chờ đợi gió lên
Ngay Xuân ấm áp, thổi sang đất tốt

Her clarion o’er the dreaming earth, and fill
(Driving sweet buds like flocks to feed in air)
With living hues and odours plain and hill:

Wild Spirit, which art moving everywhere;
Destroyer and Preserver; hear, O hear!
Hỡi Cuồng Phong Thần, tám hướng vần xoay
Kẻ Hủy Diệt và Bảo Tồn *, hãy nghe (tôi) gọi

II
Thou on whose stream, ‘mid the steep sky’s commotion,
Loose clouds like Earth’s decaying leaves are shed,
Shook from the tangled boughs of Heaven and Ocean,

Angels of rain and lightning: there are spread
On the blue surface of thine airy surge,
Like the bright hair uplifted from the head

Of some fierce Maenad, even from the dim verge
Of the horizon to the zenith’s height,
The locks of the approaching storm. Thou dirge

Of the dying year, to which this closing night
Will be the dome of a vast sepulchre
Vaulted with all thy congregated might

Of vapours, from whose solid atmosphere
Black rain, and fire, and hail will burst: O hear!

III

Thou who didst waken from his summer dreams
The blue Mediterranean, where he lay,
Lulled by the coil of his crystalline streams,

Beside a pumice isle in Baiae’s bay,
And saw in sleep old palaces and towers
Quivering within the wave’s intenser day,

All overgrown with azure moss and flowers
So sweet, the sense faints picturing them! Thou
For whose path the Atlantic’s level powers

Cleave themselves into chasms, while far below
The sea-blooms and the oozy woods which wear
The sapless foliage of the ocean, know

Thy voice, and suddenly grow grey with fear,
And tremble and despoil themselves: O hear!

IV

If I were a dead leaf thou mightest bear;
If I were a swift cloud to fly with thee;
A wave to pant beneath thy power, and share
Nếu tôi, lá chết, vương bên Thần Gió
Nếu tôi mây hoang, bay lướt cùng Người
Hoặc sóng thở gấp kề cận quyền năng, chia

The impulse of thy strength, only less free
Than thou, O Uncontrollable! If even
I were as in my boyhood, and could be
Nhịp tim bỏng rẫy, yếu kém tự do
Này hỡi, Thênh thang vô lượng !
Hoa niên tuổi nhỏ, nếu được cùng Ngài

The comrade of thy wanderings over Heaven,
As then, when to outstrip thy skiey speed
Scarce seemed a vision; I would ne’er have striven

As thus with thee in prayer in my sore need.
Oh! lift me as a wave, a leaf, a cloud!
I fall upon the thorns of life! I bleed!
Dẫu trong nguyện cầu tha thiết hoài mong
Ôi, hãy nâng tôi, sóng nhỏ, lá con, mây bé
Đã ngã bên đời nhọn hoắt chông gai, chảy máu !

A heavy weight of hours has chained and bowed
One too like thee: tameless, and swift, and proud.
Thời gian đá tảng đã xích xiềng, đè cúi
kẻ vô cương, hoang dại, tự tung, tự tác tợ Người.

V

Make me thy lyre, even as the forest is:
What if my leaves are falling like its own!
The tumult of thy mighty harmonies

Will take from both a deep, autumnal tone,
Sweet though in sadness. Be thou, Spirit fierce,
My spirit! Be thou me, impetuous one!
Bỗng hóa suối âm dịu êm buồn lắng
Ngọt ngào hương hoa. Hãy biến tôi ngay
Như Người mạnh mẽ. Hoạt linh, sinh động

Drive my dead thoughts over the universe
Like withered leaves to quicken a new birth!
And, by the incantation of this verse,

Scatter, as from an unextinguished hearth
Ashes and sparks, my words among mankind!
Be through my lips to unawakened Earth
Tro bụi, than lửa. Cầu xin lời tôi trong cõi nhân gian
Môi khô cất lời gởi Trần gian đó mộng mị ngủ vùi

The trumpet of a prophecy! O Wind,
If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?

"'Conventional wisdom has it that the China juggernaut is unstoppable and that the world must adjust to the reality of the Asian giant as a—perhaps the—major global power. A mini-industry of “China rise” prognosticators has emerged over the past decade, all painting a picture of a twenty-first-century world in which China is a dominant actor. This belief is understandable and widespread—but wrong."
David Shambaugh

One in many

One in many maps which proves China does not have any rights regarding the Paracels and Spratly islands. Many old maps in Chinese language--not falsely fabricated in recent 10 years or so-- do not have those islands in them
Obviously, the 9-dash-line claim of China is a product of imagination and "force claim" about water territory and Spratly, Paracels islands. Pretty clearly, the Paracels islands were meant to associate , much-likely administratively, with old-days Vietnam kingdom ( the Empire d' Annam)

Maps which reveal lies—

Administrative maps from the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), especially the Hoàng Dữ Toàn Lãm Đồ ( Huang Yu Quan Lan Tu = 皇與全覽圖 ), published in 1719, and others show the territory of China ends, near parallel 18 at the southernmost, which is the south end of Hainan. Another map called Huang Yu Quan Lan Fen Sheng Tu (皇與全覽分省圖), or The Great Full Provincial Maps (published 1721-1722) have the same feature— meaning China does not have Paracels and Spratly islands and ends in Hainan. US Library of Congress has the Huang Yu Quan Lan Fen Sheng Tu, with 15 maps.

"The State Department study’s finding that the nine-dash line as expression of the outer limit of China’s maritime boundary is inc
onsistent with international law, is irreproachable. In the course of maritime delimitation cases, international tribunals have been disinclined, as a general principle, to weigh in on the precise status of small insular features. They have nevertheless tended to strike down the entitlements of far-removed islands/rocks that reach deep into an adjacent or opposite state’s coastal projection – as the Spratlys appear to do – and impose an inequitable ‘cut-off’ effect of that latter state’s maritime entitlement. A LOS-compliant maritime boundary drawn by Beijing should under no circumstance exceed the median line from each insular formation that it administers in the South China Sea. The nine-dash line fails this test and as a national boundary would be inconsistent with international law.”

---

“ While Moheyantook a subitist approach to enlightenment, his position was weakened when conceding that practices such as the perfection of morality, studying the sutras and teachings of the masters, and cultivating meritorious actions were appropriate. These types of actions were seen as part of the "gradualist" school, and Moheyan held that these were only necessary for those of "dim"facility and "dull" propensity. Those of "sharp" and"keen" facility and propensity do not need these practices, as they have "direct" access to the truth through meditation. This concession to the "gradualists", that not everyone can achieve the highest state of meditation, left Moheyan open to the charge that he had a dualistic approach to practice. To overcome these inconsistencies in his thesis, Moheyan claimed that when one gave up all conceptions, an automatic, all-at-once attainment of virtue resulted. He taught that there was an "internal" practice to gain insight and liberate one-self, and an "external" practice to liberate others upaya, or skillful means). These were seen as two independent practices, a concession to human psychology and scriptural tradition.

Most Tibetan sources state that the debate was decided in Kamasila’s favour (though many Chinese sources claim Moheyan won)[2] and Moheyan was required to leave the country and that all sudden-enlightenment texts were gathered and destroyed by royal decree. This was a pivotal event in the history of Tibetan Buddhism ,which would afterward continue to follow the late Indian model with only minor influence from China.”
