IN MEMORIAM WITH GREATEST RESPECT

To commemorate and pay tribute to these heroes who committed suicide around 4/30/15 to uphold their honor and sense of responsibility when communists of North Vietnam entered Saigon.

The reason for their suicides: Each one has some different personal reason, of course, but the common, the shared principal motive/reason/ idea is— according to some traditional “perception and belief ” on the responsibility of a leader, or the head of a city, a region, especially the general commanding/leading a citadel, a fortress— if you lose the war to defend, and protect the people, the citadel,  town, or region,  you should terminate your life to show that you have dedicated your life, and tried to fulfill your role, carry out your duty and responsibility to the earnest, most honorable way. That was the way Phan Thanh Giản, Nguyễn Tri Phương, Hoàng Diệu, Võ Tánh, Ngô Tùng Châu etc.conducted, carried themselves through and fulfilled their responsibilities when Vietnam lost regions, citadels etc. in the past. In the event of Black April in 1975, seven men, 5 generals , one colonel, one lieutenant colonel are the most memorable in the hearts and minds of the people.

They are :

  1. Gen. Nguyễn Khoa Nam
  2. Gen. Lê Văn Hưng
  3. Gen. Phạm Văn Phú
  4. Gen. Lê Nguyên Vỹ
  5. Gen. Trần Văn Hai
  6. Col. Hồ Ngọc Cẩn
  7. Lt. Col. Nguyễn Văn Long

In the same sense of honor, of sharing pain and resolute non-acceptance of communism, some other “unknown/not well-known”  officers and their soldiers in the Airborne, Marines,  Ranger Corps, also committed suicide.
